Norfolk Southern Reaches Agreement with OSHA

The company will improve working conditions at the East Palestine derailment site.

Railroad company Norfolk Southern agreed to improve working conditions for those working to clean up the hazardous waste from the site of its large freight derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had inspected working conditions and found that the site violated four workplace safety requirements.

OSHA fined the company for the violations, such as the failure to require workers to wear respiratory protection and chemical-resistant shoes. The agency entered into a formal agreement with Norfolk Southern, requiring them to rectify their violations and implement a medical service program for those affected by chemical exposure.

“This agreement will improve the safety and health controls in place for Norfolk Southern employees who responded and help educate the rail operator’s employees on the lessons learned so they are prepared should another emergency occur,” said OSHA Area Office Director Howard Eberts.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For Assistant Secretary Douglas Parker as he oversees OSHA.
  • For OSHA officials as they seek to keep workers safe and healthy.
  • For workers and residents in East Palestine as recovery efforts continue.
